Why Brownfield Reconciliation Matters in Automation Programs

Automation programmes often underestimate the gap between recorded and actual network state. Reconciliation closes it.

Most automation programmes do not run against a clean, greenfield network. They run against a brownfield estate built up over years, where records of what is deployed are often incomplete or out of date.

When automation acts on inaccurate data, it produces inconsistent or incorrect changes, and trust in the whole programme erodes. Reconciliation - comparing actual deployed state against intended configuration and resolving the differences - is what turns an unreliable baseline into one automation can safely build on.

Reconciliation is not a one-off cleanup. It is an ongoing capability: detecting drift, surfacing discrepancies, and keeping the source of truth aligned with reality. Programmes that invest in it early tend to automate faster and with far fewer surprises later.
